- General Awards. These proposals must have documented support of a relevant ESPN Working Group but the Working Group Board does not have to be actively involved in the research project.
- ESPN Working Group Awards. These are proposals where the relevant ESPN Working Group is actively involved in the project. Evidence for this by way of accompanying documentation must be provided.
- Young Investigator Award. This new award from 2021 is intended to be start-up funding to support new researchers early in their careers. It is open to proposals where the principal applicant is under 35 years old.
ESPN regularly awards a number of research grants. At the Spring 2020 ESPN Council meeting, the frequency of grant awards was increased from biennially to annually. The awards are open to ESPN members only. The amount of funding granted depends on the financial situation of ESPN and current funding, e.g. by industry partners, but will generally not exceed EUR 20,000. A grant application call is made via members’ emailing and on the ESPN website. The applications are reviewed by both internal (ESPN Council) and external (usually senior ESPN members not currently serving on Council) reviewers. Winners are announced at the General Assembly held during the annual ESPN congress.
- Grants will be awarded for collaborative work within Europe, ideally within more than one country. Applicants submitting single-centre projects are unlikely to be successful.
- There will be three categories for grants:
- A general grant category (application of an ESPN member with documented support by an ESPN Working Group)
- Working Group grants (must include evidence that the relevant Working Group Board is actively involved in the project of the grant)
- Young Investigator Award as start-up funding for projects (the principal application must be aged 35 or younger
- All categories of applications will be scored and ranked together and awards made to the agreed number of top-ranking applications, but ensuring that one Young Investigator grant and at least one Working Group grant are awarded each year; if there is not a sufficiently highly-enough ranked general grant, it will not be awarded that year.
- Unsuccessful candidates from previous years may re-apply but they need to declare previous submissions on the application form and itemise how the revised application has addressed previous reviewers’ comments.
- Previously successful candidates may not reapply for further awards until 3 years after their last successful award.
- Current members of ESPN Council may not be the principal applicant.
- The total amount available for grants that year will be decided by Council at their spring meeting
- A timetable for the call for applications, closing date, reviewers’ deadline and winners’ announcement will also be agreed at that meeting. The President will propose two or three Council members to act as internal reviewers.
- If an internal reviewer has any connection to a grant application that year, they must demit from their internal review role at the earliest opportunity. The president may then appoint a replacement internal reviewer.
- Council will suggest and agree three individuals to be external reviewers. These will be senior ESPN members in good standing who have experience of clinical and/or laboratory research. Effort will be made to ensure good representation of European countries and areas of clinical interest with these reviewers.
- A reserve external reviewer may be chosen in case of decline from the one of the others.
- The internal reviewers will be responsible for:
- Approaching external reviewers to ask if they would agree to take part
- Communicating expectations of their role and the timetable to reviewers
- Sharing the application forms and a template score-sheet with external reviewers
- Reviewing and scoring/ranking applications prior to receiving external reviews
- Collating all scores/ranks
- Meeting to agree recommendations for the winning applications
- Communicating the collective reviewers’ recommendations and individual scoring/ranking to the ESPN President
- Reviewing the grant application process each year and making any recommendations for improvement to Council
- The call for applications will be made via the grants webpage of the ESPN website with signposting from a home-page slider and also via specific emailing to all ESPN members
- All applications will be considered in the general grant category; applicants may request for their application to be included within the ESPN Working Group category and/or Young Investigator Award as well if relevant.
- A list of conflicts of interest for internal reviewers should be complied at the start of the review process. These must include (but are not limited to):
- Membership of the relevant Working Group
- Shared nationality with the principal applicant for that particular application
- Shared centre with any one of the co-applicants for that particular application
- Internal reviewers should check that no principal applicants have received ESPN grants over the previous 2 years.
- Internal reviewers should check that all applications are in the correct category: WG-applications should include evidence of WG board involvement (not just a supporting letter); any principal applicant under 35 years may be included in the Young Investigator Award category.
- For the review process a previously agreed-upon standardised form will be used both by internal and external reviewers. This form will cover the following aspects that shall be scored upon:
- Problem definition, scientific hypothesis and aims
- Relevance to clinical practice
- Innovative potential
- Work plan and feasibility in proposed time
- Cost/benefit
- Contribution to improved collaboration
- Statistical design (score is left blank if not relevant)
- Ethical profile (score is left blank if not relevant)
- Scientific profile of principal applicant
- Reviewer will give a score on every single aspect listed above. The maximal score for that aspect is shown alongside
- Scoring will be summed up for a final score for a specific application. If the statistics or ethical aspects are not relevant, the final score will be adjusted accordingly. For example, for a project that does not need ethical approval, the reviewer would leave the box blank meaning a total possible score of 95. The candidate’s adjusted score would then be multiplied by 1.05 (=100/95).
- In case of equal sums of multiple applications, the reviewer can give a personal recommendation for ranking.
- Reviewers are also requested to underline the scoring by providing short written comments on strengths and limitations of the applications with emphasis on the aspects defined for scoring.
- Scores and rankings of all reviewers will be summarized by the internal reviewers to come up with a ranking list to be presented to the president.
- At the end of the process, the lead internal reviewer should produce a short report for the autumn Council meeting. The SOP should be reviewed and any amendments to the process discussed at the same Council meeting.
- ESPN council will be informed of the results during the council meeting at the beginning of the corresponding yearly ESPN meeting.
- Applicants will be informed of the results during the general assembly of the yearly ESPN meeting.
- All applicants (both successful and unsuccessful) will receive a written confirmation and reviewers’ comments during the weeks after the ESPN meeting.
- Funded projects are requested to provide progress report annually until the project is complete (or after a maximum of 3 years if the work is continuing). Reports will be presented to the council and then be published on the ESPN webpage.
- At the completion of the project, or after 3 years (whichever comes sooner), a final project report is requested which should list publications and also financial details of how the grant was used.
- Templates are available for 6 month, annual interim and final reports.
- The president and one named ESPN council member will be responsible for contacting grant holders to request reports.
- Funded projects are requested to acknowledge ESPN funding with indication of the grant number in any publication emerging from the project for 5 years after initial funding.

Call for training grants
ESPN is working hard to develop and enhance training standards that foster development of all current and future trainees and ensure that they have reached appropriate skill levels at the end of their training. Up to 3 training grants will be awarded twice yearly to young paediatric nephrologists (or paediatricians working in centres with children affected by kidney diseases) within Europe to enable them to spend up to 6 months at one or more established paediatric nephrology centres.
Applications for ESPN training grants are open throughout the year, however deadlines for applications are 1st September and 1st February each year so that the applications can be discussed at the ESPN council meetings which are held in February-March and September-October. The decisions will be shared with applicants within two weeks of the ESPN council meeting. Late applications will not be considered.
Preference will be given to applicants who will perform a research project alongside their clinical attachment in the hosting centre. It would normally be expected that the trainee seeks training in a different country. Grants for training programmes within the same country will be considered but will need to justify why there is not local or national support for this training.
The total value of the training grant will be up to 3000 euros or 500 euros per month for a programme of less than 6 months.
All applications will be evaluated by the ESPN council on the basis of the candidates’ qualifications and educational needs.
Unsuccessful candidates from previous years may re-apply. Current ESPN council members may not apply and if they are involved in the traineeship (as home or hosting centre leads) they should not be involved in the reviewing process of the applications. Training grants will not normally be awarded more than once to the same individual. Training centres can host an ESPN-sponsored trainee once every 2 years.
The below documents should be sent all together to the President and the Young Paediatric Nephrologists Network Coordinator (contact details here below):
- ) The application form (including the signature of the head of department)
- ) Curriculum vitae
- ) Letter of acceptance from the clinical lead who will be responsible for the training during the internship/traineeship
- ) Reference letter from the candidate’s current supervisor
- ) Details of the traineeship (e.g. weekly/monthly duties of the prospective candidate). The candidate could attach the clinic’s program and precise in which duties they will participate (if not all).
A receipt of application will be sent by email.
A training report should be completed at the end of the training period by the trainer and trainee and sent in within one month to our ESPN secretary by the trainee with a copy of the application form. The training report should be sent to both the President and the YPNN Coordinator.
Click here to download the application form and the training report form. The latest needs to be completed at the end of the traineeship and submitted within one month after the end of the traineeship, as indicated here above. The financial application form for the accepted applicants can be downloaded here.
Please find here previous trainees’s experiences.

The European Society for Pediatric Nephrology (ESPN) and The Pediatric Nephrology Research Consortium (PNRC) have created a joint research program to provide funding and opportunity for researchers from each organization to conduct research on shared projects.
The decision to create a joint research program is born out of a desire to promote greater partnership and collegiality between our colleagues in Europe and North America. Hopefully, this will in enhance our collective ability to improve the care of children with kidney disease through collaboration and research.
This ESPN-PNRC collaborative effort will create the ESPN-PNRC Joint Research Program to fund research that is jointly conducted within both the ESPN and the PNRC. Each project must be co-led by researchers from each organization.
Proposed projects may be clinical or translational research in design. The total grant award will vary as funds and needs dictate. Each award will comprise funds to support eligible research activities and can include funds for travel to further collaboration and/or enable a presentation at international professional meetings and other supplies/resources needed to accomplish the research project.
Governance
In keeping with the nature of the joint research program, governance will be equally shared across the ESPN-PNRC Joint Research Program Steering Committee. The committee will be co-chaired by a member from each organization with one Co-Chair selected by the ESPN Board from the ESPN membership and one Co-Chair selected by the PNRC Board of Directors from PNRC membership.
The joint research program steering committee will consist of the two Co-Chairs and two members selected from ESPN membership approved by the ESPN Board and two members from the PNRC membership approved by the PNRC Board of Directors.
The Co-Chairs will report regularly to their respective boards regarding activity within the joint research program.
ESPN-RNRC Joint Program Steering Committee Responsibilities
The committee will accept, review and score applications based on specifications stipulated in Program RFAs. Typical grant duration will be 1-2 years.
The ESPN Ukraine Task Force was created directly after the invasion of Ukraine and launched immediately a number of initiatives to support patients, families and colleagues in need in Ukraine and surrounding countries.
Some of the recent initiatives of our group are:
- Supply drugs and medical equipment for dialysis and transplant paediatric patients
- Arrange online consultations for patients who cannot reach paediatric nephrology centres
- Provide free online access to the ESPN congress 2022 in Ljubljana for all 42 Paediatric Nephrologists from Ukraine.
We are all grateful and proud of the effort of our Ukrainian colleagues to keep providing care to their patients despite unimaginable challenges, as well as the effort of all our colleagues ensuring the continuation of treatment for our now refugee patients. We hope that this dramatic situation will end soon, and we will continuously offer our support to our patients, their families and our colleagues in Ukraine and surrounding countries until better days come.
Thank you all for your support,

Kiev, March 30, 2022
Dear ESPN Council and ESPN members,
On behalf of the Ukrainian Association of Pediatric Nephrologists I would like to express our sincere gratitude for providing humanitarian help for the children of Ukraine during the war.
After February 24, due to the abrupt discontinuation in supply of drugs and medical equipment, children with kidney diseases in Ukraine have no access to life-saving treatments. Pediatric nephrology departments are closed not only in occupied territories but also in Kiev, where the university pediatric nephrology center had to stop working.
In this catastrophic situation ESPN council immediately offered their help and during the first week of war the most important medications (immunosuppressive and anti-hypertensive drugs, heparin) have been sent via the Belgian Ukrainian Embassy to Kiev, and immediately distributed to sick children. Moreover, ESPN also invited children with kidney diseases to the European centers of Pediatric Nephrology and offered online consultations for those who cannot reach pediatric nephrology centers.
Even more, Ukrainian Pediatric Nephrologists will get free online access to the ESPN Congress 2022 in Ljubljana so that they can keep connection to their European colleagues.
We truly appreciate the swift response of ESPN to the needs of our sick children, without bureaucracy and delays!! Thank you for your human attitude and your support!
Prof. Dr. D. Ivanov
President of Ukrainian Association of Pediatric Nephrologists
