The ESPN Hypertension Working Group (WG) has recently been formed with the goal of promoting collaboration between European paediatric nephrology centers conducting research in hypertension and cardiovascular medicine. The WG will also promote research and teaching activities as well as actions for awareness.
Aims and vision
The aims of the ESPN Hypertension WG are:
- to develop a hypertension curriculum for paediatric nephrologists to address current clinical shortcomings.
- to establish a network of specialists and centers pursuing research and clinical excellence in hypertension.
- to evaluate new technologies and evaluate methods of assessing hypertension and hypertension-mediated organ damage.
- to promote hypertension prevention policies in children and adolescents.
- to assess the efficacy of new treatments and medications beyond observational studies and communicate the need for trials to the trialists’ community, encouraging consideration of paediatric patients with CKD in the design of RCTs.
The ultimate scope will address the vision of reducing susceptibility to adverse cardiovascular events in young adulthood, thereby gaining years of life through timely and appropriate management and increasing life expectancy.
As hypertension and cardiovascular disease affects the entire CKD population, the Hypertension WG will interact with and link to other ESPN WGs to coordinate joint activities on the topic, with liaisons to other ESPN WGs and in collaboration with other scientific societies (e.g. IPNA, ERA, ESH).
